Should Parents Allow Their Children to Fight Martin Christian Gonzalez 11/1/18 S. Ramos English 010 Have you ever been knocked out cold before? Do you know how scary it is to be in that unconscious state due to a punch in the face?   I can tell you it’s something you’d never want your children to ever experience. When I was 6 years old, me and my friend were playing catch in our apartment complex in Pico River California on a bright sunny day. Everything seems to be going well until I threw the ball a little too far away from my friend to catch. It accidently hit a boy that was in a group of his friends. They seem to be in the 5th grade perhaps middle school by then. I was only in first grade at the time. The angry group of kids walked up to me and my buddy and asked â€Å"Who the f*#k threw that ball†!? I replied, â€Å"I did, but I didn’t mean for it to go that far I’m so sorry†. I turned and pointed to my friend and said â€Å"He was supposed to catch it†. By the time I turned my head towards the boy who was yelling at my face I just remembered feeling a great force in my left eye and everything went blank. I tried to focus on what happened but everything was a blur and I didn’t even know where I was at anymore. By the time I stood up crying my bloody eye out, the groups of boys ran off and I had to get carried up to my apartment door where I lived. I got sucker punched without even realizing what happened. In that moment I knew, I never want to experience that scary moment ever again. I started to understand that I got knocked out because I took my eyes off the kid for a split second and once you do that, you never know what could happen the next second. My mother was devastated that it happened because I was such a happy-go-lucky kid growing up until I got punched in the face. She ended up putting me into karate classes as a kid and it taught me so much knowledge that I wish I knew before that day. Karate taught me that you should never take your eyes off your opponent and to never underestimate anyone under any circumstances. In middle school, I encountered another problem where this kid was jealous of me because I was with a girl he liked. We ended up meeting after school where we settled out his problem against me. With the knowledge I had in karate, I ended up showing that kid to never cause me problems ever again, same goes for his friend that attended the fight. I am now currently in boxing helping out many young kids who are just starting to get into the martial arts world due to some sort of bullying incident they had at school. Yet, there are some parents out there that think putting their kid through any fighting classes is â€Å"dangerous†. Let me assure you, it’s a very smart decision you can do for the safety of your child inside and outside the classes themselves. Martial art classes don’t just throw your kid in the ring for another child the beat the sense out of them. Normally, they can’t spare with anyone else without their parent’s permission and attendance. They teach your kids discipline, respect, confidence, and most importantly, physical health. Your child will not only become more educated on a street fight whenever they encounter one, but to also respect the people around them at all times knowing that they have the training they developed in class. Plus, it’s a great way to be more involved in your little one’s life by always supporting them and having fun watching them have fun. Today, bullying is something that is very hard to stay away from. Trouble lurks around every corner of the playground or campus in general. Even outside of school, you may run into trouble without doing anything to cause it. It’s sad that at any time, someone may way up to your child and want to start problems over nothing or just to take their money or possessions away from them. Being able to predict something happening ahead of time is something the classes will teach you as well. For example, if you see a group of kids or just someone approaching you, you will be able to tell if they are just casually walking by or may do something to you without hesitation. Being alert and focused can put you in a step ahead of the situation before they even begin to try anything with you. Knowing what to do and when to do it can help you potentially save your own life. A lot of children these days lack the physical conditioning that can help them save themselves from bullies or just to be able to be healthy in general. The classes will put them through a lot of fun physical conditioning that will make them healthier and grow up to live a healthy lifestyle. Appreciating your health at a young age can provide a long meaningful life for your children. The classes put your child through fun activities that they’ll enjoy doing without realizing they’re losing weight in the first place. They’ll also teach you as a parent some helpful tips on keeping your kids in shape and to also help you get on track yourself alongside with your child. I highly recommend you think about getting your child into an affordable martial arts class that suitable for you and your family. Preparing your child for the worst-case scenario when it comes to just walking to the store is honestly the best decision you can make as a parent for them. Use a Planner Whether its an app or a plain old spiral notebook, a planner is essential for keeping track of your schedule. Dont make the mistake of telling yourself youll remember it all. Use only one system, and write down everything - including time to sleep and time to play! 2. Determine Your Priorities Speaking of sleep and play, some people need more of some activities than others. Effective time management depends on your bodys needs, your personal values, and your ability to prioritize. If you can get by on six hours of sleep, thats great. But if you know you need at least eight hours in order to function, dont even pretend that six will work. 3. Go to Class First of all, youre probably paying top dollar for those classes. Second, trying to make up for what you have missed almost always takes longer than the actual class would have. Borrowing notes and doubling up on assignments is a pain. So save yourself time and trouble and go. Go in your pajamas and shades if you have to. Just show up. And some instructors give attendance points, so why not maximize your grade just by breathing in the right room? 4. If At First You Dont Succeed†¦ If you try using a planner and it doesnt work for you, dont give up. Try something else. The cold, hard truth of modern adult life is that you have to get in the habit of scheduling your day. Theres just too much going on to wing it without missing something. Find the system that works for you. It doesnt have to be the hottest thing on the market. You might do better by downgrading your system to something simpler. 5. Leave Some Room Remember that you need time to commute between activities, use the bathroom, grab a drink, and so forth. Dont sandwich things so tightly that you have no room to breathe. Include time cushions between appointments as much as you can. Youll also want to block out large chunks of free time to accommodate those unexpected things, such as a midnight fast-food run or Game of Thrones or True Detective marathon. 6. Just Say No You cant do it all and expect to get good grades and graduate on time. Once in a while, youre going to have to turn down a party in favor of sleep, or a workout in favor of extra study time. Remember those priorities we talked about earlier? Write them down if you have to. Number them in order of importance. Then, when faced with two choices, youll easily know what to do. You may not always make the best choice, but most of the time, youll be able to stick to your guns. 7. Plan for Next Semester You can try to arrange next semesters class schedule to suit you better. If you spent most of the current semester hitting Snooze or skipping those 8 a.m. classes, do everything you can to avoid early morning courses. And if you ended up with weird chunks of time between classes that were too short to do anything productive, try to schedule next semesters courses back to back. Get them all out of the way, and then youll be left with larger chunks of time that are more flexible for your needs. Tell your advisor about your priorities, and he or she can help you work out an ideal class plan. Time management doesnt have to be a drag. Cornelius Eady's Brutal Imagination While most fictional characters are given a voice with which to express themselves, that voice usually does not stray beyond their realm of fiction and therefore is restricted from the power of the real world. The imaginary black man that Susan Smith falsely claimed had abducted her children in 1994, however, existed in reality in the minds of the American public for nine days until the truth surfaced about her infanticide. Cornelius Eady’s poetry cycle, Brutal Imagination, serves to give that imaginary black man (hereafter referred to as Zero), a voice that draws power from his simultaneous existence in both the real and fictional realms. Zero’s voice serves to explain a variety of aspects of his existence, including assertions of his own innocence, criticisms of Susan Smith, explorations of his paradoxical nature, and social commentary regarding the notions of free will versus powerful exterior forces. Zero is the product of Susan Smith’s and Cornelius Eady’s imaginations, and therefore lacks his own capacity for free will. Eady, however, allows Zero the seeming capacity for free thought and opinion, and therefore the opinions expressed by the character will hereafter be declared to be those of Zero, rather than Eady. Lucid of his lack of free will, Zero admits, â€Å"I float in forces / I can’t always control† (17). In the effort to discover what these external forces are, he feels compelled to explore his origins that caused his inception in the mind of Susan Smith. The attempt is made to explain various hypothetical examples of potential interactions that led to his ultimate creation. He assumes that at a young age, Susan was told that that â€Å"All [blacks] do... ...t actually be dead. â€Å"And here is the one good thing: / If [Zero is] alive, then so, briefly, are [the children]† (7). This abandonment of reality did not necessarily happen or may have been transient, but Zero simply maintains its existence as a possibility. Though described as â€Å"dull in his invented hide† (28) by â€Å"Uncle Tom in Heaven,† Zero is actually quite complex in his desire to articulate his ideas about his brief life with Susan and his life eternal. His complexity is compounded further by his paradoxical nature, especially his simultaneous existence as a â€Å"real† man and as a fictional product of Susan Smith’s brutal imagination. As an eternal symbol of the oppressed and abused, he could be said to maintain a symbolic reality regarding the existence of external forces acting against the oppressed, stripping them of the extent of their free will.

Next to Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple are two of the most recognizable detectives in fiction because of their distinctive attributes. Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective, is noted for moustaches and his â€Å"egg-shaped head†. From the rather violent village of St. Mary Mead, Miss Jane Marple is known for knitting needles. A third detective, Ariadne Oliver, is an author with a fondness for apples. Interestingly, the last character is also thought to be Christie’s alter ego. Through her characters, Christie is able to express her own views on the social issues of her time. Ariadne Oliver, Poirot, and Miss Marple live in time and a world that has changed drastically and perhaps that is why the world of Agatha Christie is so interesting to us till: nostalgia. Although she is from a small village, Miss Marple seems to get around a great deal. In one adventure, she is convalescing in the Barbados when a murderer strikes in the resort where she is staying. Poirot and Ariadne Oliver can be found in small villages, London, and exotic settings in the Middle East. Despite their varied locales, the common element that runs through Christie’s novel is the â€Å"closed† society. These worlds are cut off culturally, economically, or physically, as in the case of Ten Little Indians, which is set on an island off the Devon coast. Poirot’s world is largely that of the upper classes, but considering the number of bodies found in stately country homes, they can be rather dangerous group to cross! The time is never specified, but a vague period between World War I and World War II is often favoured. Indeed, when in some of Christie’s later novels like Passenger to Frankfurt or Toward Zero, Christie uses the time period of the 60’s, the novels do not quite ring true. Vintage Agatha Christie harkens back to a more innocent time, although perhaps a more murderous one! Time and fashion may change in Christie’s world, but Christie’s moral stance stays firm. Through Christie’s novels, we can gain insight into the morality of the early 20th century, which still might have some resonance. In Christie’s world, murderers are punished by hanging. Even the gentle Miss Marple states in one novel that she feels it only right that a cold-blooded murder should be executed. Poirot favours capital punishment as well, expressing the view that it is more humane than putting a person in a small jail cell for life. Divorce is frowned on in Christie’s novels. After Christie’s first marriage to an RAF officer ended in divorce when he left her for another woman, Christie’s wrote several novels in which retired air force officers tended to be the villains! The candidate for the Democrats was an election in itself. Three contenders showed promising outcomes for a Democratic victory. The first candidate was representative Oscar Underwood of Alabama, he secured the support of the South. The second candidate was Champ Clark, he had support from the rich party members including a newspaper publisher named William Randolph Hearst. The final candidate was Woodrow Wilson, who had just been elected to governer of New Jersey two years earlier. It took 46 ballots, but finally Woodrows idea for moral revival of the nation tipped the scale in his favor and won the spot for Democratic candidate. The Republicans we split between two candidates, William H. Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. Taft controlled most of the convention in Chicago, but when it finally came down to it Taft was chosen. The newly gathered Progressive Party, who were basically Republican, stormed out of the convention and declared it a fraud. With time running out, ! they gathered together and urged Roosevelt to lead a new party. Roosevelt did not think twice, he happily agreed and was nominated for candidate of the Progressive party. The fourth candidate in the election was the small Socialist party and their nomination of Eugene V. Debs. As for the issues, the Republicans were for conservation and banking, currency reform, mild revision of the tariff and for regulation of trusts. The Democrats also wanted conservation and banking and currency reform, but the similarities end there. They wanted much lower duties and to end all monopolies. The election was not a four-way battle, it was primarily between Roosevelt and Wilson. Taft had very little popular support and Debs was not favored by anyone.
